This tours (Sines, Porto Covo, Vila Nova Mil Fontes, Zambujeira Mar, Alentejo tour) starts on Sines, then go to Porto Covo, V.N Mil Fontes and finish on Zambujeira do Mar.
We start our tour in Sines, an old fishing town. Best known in Portugal as the birthplace of the explorer Vasco da Gama.
His statue stands proudly beside the walls of the castle in which he grew up. The museum inside recounts the life of this national hero.
Divided into lower and upper parts. At the top of the hill is the castle and a small warren of streets along corridors of whitewashed and tile-covered buildings.
Down the hill is the Praia da Vasco da Gama, the natural cove that holds the town’s fishing port.
Following the route, Porto Côvo is 10 kilometres to the south. With a uniform grid of single-storey houses converging on the central Praça Marquês de Pombal.
This cosy square has the sweet parish church, iron gaslights and palms bordered by low cottages with terracotta roofs and It’s the fabulous rocky coastline next to it.
From there you´ll have chance to see in a very photogenic setting, an abandoned sea fort guarding a bay with an island 100 metres a little way offshore.
The fort was constructed during the Philippine Dynasty in the 16th century when Portugal was under Spanish control.
Along this stretch of the coast, Vila Nova de Milfontes has an attractive, whitewashed centre, sparkling beaches nearby.
It’s located in the middle of the beautiful Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, in a lovely sand-edged limb of estuary.
Quieter than Vila Nova, Zambujeira attracts a backpacker and surfy crowd. Though in August the town is a party place and hosts the massive music fest, Festa do Sudoeste.
The high-season crowds obscure Zambujeira’s out-of-season charms: fresh fish in family-run restaurants, blustering clifftop walks and a dramatic, empty coast.
