Overview

Óbidos, Peniche, Mafra, Ericeira Private Tour

Peniche is a small fishing town where the fishing industry is a very important activity. A lot of restaurants are specialized in fish and seafood.

Along the way we enjoy this magnificent coastal scenery until we arrive at the fishing village of Baleal. A fusion between land and sea. Stop for you to discover it.

Our journey takes us north through the hilly landscape of the west coast until we reach Mafra. Mafra Convent has inspired several Portuguese writers as our Nobel Prize for Literature (1998) José Saramago. Visit to the imposing Mafra Convent, largest baroque building in Portugal.

On the way back, a stop at Ericeira, a charming Portuguese fishing town that is situated along a coastline of outstanding surfing beaches. This powerful and reliable surf has transformed peaceful Ericeira into a surfing mecca.

Surrounded by a classic crenellated wall, Óbidos’ gorgeous historic centre is a labyrinth of cobblestoned streets and flower-bedecked. Whitewashed houses livened up with dashes of vivid yellow and blue paint.

Popular for its long, fabulous town beach, nearby surf strands, Peniche is spectacularly set on a headland surrounded by sea. The walled historic centre makes for pleasant strolling, and the seaside fort where Salazar’s regime detained political prisoners is a must-see for anyone interested in Portuguese history. Artisan lovers will enjoy Peniche’s speciality, handmade lace, and you can watch the nimble fingers of women at work.

Picturesquely draped across sandstone cliffs above the blue Atlantic, sunny, whitewashed Ericeira is popular with lisboêtas seeking a quick weekend getaway. It’s equally renowned for spectacular ocean vistas and excellent seafood restaurants and is also a mecca for surfers, who come here for the great waves and camaraderie. The town’s old centre is clustered around Praça da República, with the sprawl of newer development spreading south and north.
